Testimonies: Tyler Sorenson | Bible Lands 2019

We consider it an honor and privilege to provide a way for people to experience God in the lands of the Bible. We also know that God speaks and reveals Himself in new and fresh ways. These articles strive to share people's stories of all that God did and what He spoke to them while traveling through Israel, Jordan, Greece, Turkey and/or Italy.

Bible Lands is an annual 3-week tour designed for college students, pastors and ministry leaders on sabbatical, and those who are looking for a new adventure. In 2019, over 60 students journeyed through Israel and Jordan learning about and experiencing the history of their faith.

One of those students, Tyler Sorensen, shared a testimony with the entire group about the clarity he received concerning his passion and mission in life:

“Ever since I was young, I knew that God had a plan for each and every one of us, I just didn’t know what He had in store for me. I knew it must be different than most people because I was born with hearing loss and raised in a deaf family of 9. Did you know that there are over 70 million deaf people around the world, and less than 2% know Christ? There is not a single completed Bible in any sign language, and there are over 450 different sign languages.

I am starting to recognize that God is calling me to reach the deaf community, who are in great need of a Bible that they can understand in their heart language.

It is important to note that sign language is a three-dimensional language, which means whenever we talk about a certain passage in the Bible we have to set up the environment that the characters are in before we tell the story. The need for accuracy in sign language translation work is huge, which is why I am so incredibly thankful that God has given me the opportunity to go to Israel.

Thank you to the incredible professors and tour guides from the Center for Holy Lands Studies. They taught me so much about the importance of historical context in the Bible, paired with me taking-in the geography of the land; it all just clicked in my mind and I could explain the Bible like I never could have before! This is God at work in my life, just as He is working within everyone else who came on the Holy Lands trip. Seeing the Bible come to life in front of my very eyes was an awe-inspiring, life-changing experience and I praise God for that every day since!"

Tyler is a student at North Central University in Minneapolis, MN. He is set to graduate in the Spring of 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical and Theological Studies.
